Hub is proud to present Canadian architect and artist David Umemoto and his work to Australia. David’s series of cast-concrete pieces form his first Australian exhibition, Settlements.
The concrete works stand as studies about volume at the juncture of sculpture and architecture.
David follows a slow creative process seeking to imitate the erosion and re-creation cycles of nature. He reacts to our endless race towards technological improvement by taking a step backwards and simplifying his artistic practice with a commitment to the handmade, to plainness and with a resistance to progress. These are structured and modular pieces but they never perfectly fit together, a result of their willingly imperfect mode of production.
